Phrases, idioms, and sensory details for PSLE composition writing, organised by theme and emotion, with real examples, common mistakes, and tips on how to use each one well.

Emotions: Grateful, Anxious, Joyful, Guilty
Each topic contains phrases organised by emotion. Every phrase shows you the phrase itself, where in a composition to use it (Opening / Build-up / Climax / Reflection), a full example sentence, a DON'T example showing the most common mistake students make, and a TIP on when and how to use it well.
6 idioms per topic with meaning, example sentence, common misuse, and a usage tip. Idioms are powerful, but only when used in the right context. Read the DON'T carefully.
8 sensory phrases per topic (Sight, Sound, Touch, Smell, Taste). These help you Show, Don't Tell.
The most important rule: do NOT memorise and plug in. These phrases are not magic formulas. A phrase copied directly into a composition without understanding its context will feel forced, and examiners will notice. Read the example, the don't, and the tip before using any phrase, then practise writing your own sentence inspired by it, not copied from it.
Pick a composition question in Composition Quest on Word Wizards, then identify its theme (e.g. Friendship, Courage, Honesty) and open the matching topic below.
Decide what your main character is feeling at each stage of the story. Find that emotion section and read the phrases.
Read each full example sentence carefully. Notice how the phrase fits into the surrounding narrative, not as an insert, but as a natural part.
Before you use any phrase, read the DON'T example. This is the exact mistake most students make. Avoiding it will set you apart.
Write a sentence INSPIRED by the phrase, in your own words and your own story. Do not copy the example sentence. Make it yours.
